Raising a Puppy with a Senior Dog

Raising a Puppy with a Senior Dog

Bringing a puppy into a home with a senior dog can be an exciting yet challenging experience. While your older dog can help teach the newcomer, it’s important to set both up for success. Here are six key things to keep in mind when raising a puppy:

Training & Mental Stimulation

Start with basic commands and consistently redirect your puppy to appropriate toys when they chew on furniture or other off-limits items. Mental stimulation is just as essential as physical exercise! We managed two puppies in a 700+ sq. ft. apartment and made it work—though most people thought we were crazy!

Establish a Routine for Raising a Puppy

Senior dogs thrive on consistency, so keeping a steady schedule for feeding, potty breaks, and playtime will help both dogs adjust. When we brought Mango home, we made sure his training aligned with Johnny’s routine to keep things seamless.

Sniff Walks for Enrichment

A simple 15-minute sniff walk offers great sensory stimulation without exhausting your puppy or overexerting your senior dog. It’s the perfect way to keep both engaged while respecting their different energy levels.

Did you know that a 15-minute sniff walk is equivalent to a 1-mile walk or an hour walk?

Grooming & Clean-Up

Puppies shed, track in dirt, and make messes. Investing in a good pet vacuum and regular grooming sessions will help keep your home happy.

Do Your Research

Whether you’re adopting or getting your puppy from a breeder, it’s important to research vets, emergency clinics, and the best care options in your area. I even did a pet sitter template to keep the routine alive.

They Grow Up Fast!

Puppies change in the blink of an eye, so cherish the little moments while they last. Having a trainer can be a game-changer. A well-balanced pack makes for a happy home!

I did research for years on what type of canine I wanted as my first solo pup and how I would bring it to Miami when I was living there, but that’ll be another story! Let’s get back to raising a puppy.
