A Day in the Life of an Indiana Tourist

We road tripped to northern Indiana and loved it!

My boyfriend and I were coming from Michigan, so we obviously had to stop at South Bend first! Guess where we went?

Hint: There’s animals everywhere!

Although humans are mammals, I definitely wasn’t talking about us! We went to the Potawatomi Zoo. Fun fact: It’s Indiana’s oldest zoo founded in 1902. It was also extremely covid secured and friendly.

Let’s talk West Lafayette

After we finished our animal adventure in South Bend, we drove to West Lafayette, home of Purdue University. We went to Another Broken Egg Cafe and caught up with a close friend from undergrad, Patrick. Patrick was a real trooper meeting us because he drove up to us from the state capital, Indianapolis! It was his day off though, so it was all good. This local spot had the cutest breakfast mugs and the little hash browns were a hit!

Driving around the Purdue campus brought me back to my college memories. I mean, I’m still a student, but it was a different vibe when reminiscing about undergrad. There were even little delivery robots roaming around campus sidewalks! What generation are we in!?

*masks on, masks on*

It was starting to get chilly, so ya’know, snuggling in photos is always nice. I think boys have the best body warmth, but maybe that’s just me!

Time for the next adventure in Indiana

Trying to find something to do last minute results in achieving anxiety levels that go through the roof or a fun, spontaneous adventure. If you know me, you know I’m usually a planner. HOWEVER, Indiana has been filled with adventures! We let our waitress at Another Broken Egg Cafe decide on our next stop… so get ready for:

Celery Bog Nature Area

A whole 105 acres of five wetland basins?! It had just rained the night before, so it was pretty humid and filled with puddles. We didn’t want to get all dirty, but we explored the trail leading up to the body of water. I absolutely love the outdoors and exploring nature. This was a hit!

Also, we didn’t see people on the trail, so I had to balance my phone on the car for some photo action. Getting creative during covid has been an experience.

Exploring with Patrick was super fun! It was time to go onto the next foodie adventure though. We hit a good spot by our hotel called the Triple XXX Family Restaurant. Some must know tips:

  • It’s a whole diner vibe! You walk in and it’s a u-shaped bar with the diner staff in the middle.
  • According to their web, it’s the last iconic Triple XXX remaining since 1929.
  • The root beer is AMAZING! Triple XXX is deemed, “Indiana’s Most Iconic Soft Drink”. We LOVED the vanilla root beer, but apparently some people prefer the chocolate one. Try both and see which you like better!
  • They’ve been featured on the Food Network, USA Today, Thrillest and more!
  • Great for families or a date night!

Who can go eat without dessert after? Not me! We walked to the Silver Dipper Ice Cream shop and it was the cutest Miami vice vibes I’ve seen for an ice cream shop. We were told that the “this s&@t just got real” flavor was the most popular one and it really was a beautiful mix of smooth salted caramel with sea salt fudge and salted cashews. YUM!

Our last adventure before heading home was at Fair Oaks Farm in Fair Oaks, Indiana and BOY, did we have an interesting amount of fun! We did a one-hour cow tour in a covid-friendly tour bus (it was a bus for like 40 people and it was 6 of us plus the driver. They had a pre-recorded narrator that pumped through the speakers about the sites we were seeing, so you can say we were extremely separated). Everyone with masks.

The land as a whole is a countryside layout that allows tourists to explore, dine and relax. It’s one of the world’s largest dairy operations because of its reputation as a major ecotourism destination. It has over 15,000 growing cows and a farm of pigs. This farm is recognized as the #1 agritourism destination in the Midwest and the pig attraction really introduced that!

We even saw a cow give birth to its calf. A very interesting experience to say the least. It was a boy!

We passed by the pig exhibit and it was so informational. This was my absolute favorite because it put into perspective what we eat out of the pig and what part of the body it comes from. Don’t you think it’s cool?!

I hope you enjoyed living vicariously through my 24 Hours in Indiana! We had so much fun learning and exploring in the northern area. It was definitely a fun time to catch up with an old friend too.
